let’s talk drums, or music in general

My Gear

I guess I should start this blog out with a rundown of what I do and what gear I use.

I’ve played in various band situations and most of them fall into the pop/rock category.  I’ve played for the Atlanta based funk band Beehive, the project that came out of Rebecca St. James touring band called Fusebox, and for the last 2 and a half years have been a member of the band SPUR58.  There have been various other gigs in between those and I still play for various local nashville bands as well as do session work when I’m home.

As far as gear, I’ve been using the same 198? DW kit since 1998.  It’s old and sounds GREAT.  It’s been recorded on almost all of the sessions I’ve done, including the last SPUR58 record, “Sleepwalkers”.  Here are the sizes:  toms (all standard depths) 12″ rack mounted on a snare basket, and a 16″ floor.  My main snare is a 5 1/2 X 14 PDP maple snare with wood hoops and my aux snare is a 5 1/2 X 12 Tama steel snare.  I use all DW hardware and a mix of Zildjian and Sabian cymbals.  My hats are 14″ Zildjian quickbeats.  My crashes are both 20″ and are a Sabian AA and AAX.  My ride is a Zildjian 21″ K heavy ride which I’m in love with.  I have been running click and tracks off of my MacBook.  Those are run through Quicktime.  I’m in the process of learning more about recording equipment and software and also want to integrate electronics into my kit for different situations.  I also have made a cheap 14″ floor tom I have into a small kick drum and use that and some perc goodies for acoustic, or small club situations.  I’ve actually come up with a different idea for that and should be working on that soon.

Maybe I’ll post some pics of my gear on this post or in a later post.  I don’t even know if anyone is reading this yet so I’ll just wait and see how this whole thing goes.

Tell me about your gear!

  4. Hey Guy! Kyle from Texas again. Wanted to say thanks for the reply. Plus I figured I’d post my gear!

I bought a Mapex M Birch series a little over a year ago from someone I know who is primarily on the jazz scene.
Standard Depth toms include an 8″ 10″ 12″ and 14″
The Kick is only a 20″ but I must say this and the toms are my favorite part of the kit. The snare is something I’m working on still for the sound I want. I may check out some of those remo heads you were talking about. Any partucular heads you like for the snare side?

Sabian Cymbals- 20″ AAX Stage Ride
    18″ HHX Crash
    And for the moment…
14″ B8’s (Next ones to get will probably something from the HHX series, or Vault Also thinking about some K Customs)

I’ve been really happy using Evans G1’s for the toms and an Emad for the kick. I’m still not sold on what to use for my snare, but I’m expirimenting!
I’ll admit, I’m a trombone player by trade, but I love playing my kit!

  5. I’d love a little jazz kit actually, that kit sounds great. I’d like a little Ludwig or Gretsch kit, 18 or 20 inch kick, a 12″ rack and a 14″ floor would be awesome. For snare side heads I usually go with Remo Ambassador snare side heads.

    Thanks for posting your kit!
